WELCOME MESSAGE

This year marks the 130th anniversary since the world's first successful pearl farm was achieved in Japan in 1893. Pearls are jewels created by living organisms and their brilliance and beauty have fascinated people all over the world. In addition, the science of the mechanisms involved in the formation of the nacre layer, which is the source of their brilliance, has attracted researchers from all over the world.

In 2011, we hosted the International Symposium on Pearl Research at the University of Tokyo to celebrate the 120th anniversary of pearl farming. For the 125th anniversary in 2018, we also organized a symposium in Toba, the city where pearl farming was first invented. As is well known, the Pearl Promotion Law was enacted in 2016, establishing a framework for nationwide cooperation among organizations involved in the pearl industry, which is essential for effectively promoting the pearl industry and pearl-related jewelry culture.

In additon, in 2022, the Japan Pearl Promotion Association, which plays an integral role in all sectors of the Japanese pearl industry, from production to export, was recognized as one of the authorized organizations to promote the export of agricultural, forestry, fishery and food products. On this occasion, we hope that people involved in pearl research in Japan will gather in Toba City to discuss the potential of pearls, which will advance pearl research and the pearl industry.
